1. Lawrence D. Abraham, EdD, is Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education and has been on the faculty of UT Austin since 1975, with research leaves in 1980-81 at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and in 1987-88 at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In 1993-94 he held the William David Blunk Memorial Professorship in recognition of outstanding teaching and service to students. Since 2003 he has served as a Co-Director of the UTeach Natural Sciences Program for preparing secondary science and mathematics teachers.
2. William Brieger, DrPH, MPH, is a professor and Senior Malaria Specialist, JHPIEGO; Certified Health Education Specialist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His major research objectives are to learn about the social, cultural and behavioural aspects of health and illness and related program design in the context of primary health care and health education in Africa. In 2008 he received an Award of Merit for Contributions to the Development of Public Health in Africa. A current project includes the study of malaria in pregnancy control, a pilot project in Akwa Iborn State Nigeria.
3. Noreen M. Clark, PhD, is the Myron E. Wegman Distinguished University Professor; Professor of Health Behavior & Health Education; Professor of Pediatrics; and Director of the Center for Managing Chronic Disease at the University of Michigan. Among her many appointments are National Program Director for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Allies Against Asthma Program; president of the Society for Public Health Education and chair of the Public Health Education Section of the American Public Health Association; chair of the Behavioral Science Section of the American Thoracic Society; and chair of the American Lung Association (ALA) Technical Advisory Group on Asthma, and the Lung Diseases Care and Education Committee.
4. Randall Cottrell, DEd, CHES, has conducted research and published in the areas of worksite health promotion, coordinated school health, and program evaluation. He has written textbooks on stress management, weight control, foundations of the profession, and most recently research methods. In April 2004, he served a two-year term as President of the American Association for Health. He is one of only two public health educators nationally to receive a Fulbright Scholar Award to explore health education efforts in China and share research about health education programs in the United States.
5. Gretchen Kerr, PhD, is associate professor and associate dean of undergraduate education at the Faculty of Physical Education and Health, University of Toronto. The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) has named Professor Gretchen Kerr one of the most influential women of the year, celebrating the impact she’s had on advancing sport and physical activity for women and girls. Her expertise includes harassment and abuse in youth sport and the retirement transition from sport.
6. Jane Kim, MSc, PhD, has won awards for her presentations at annual meetings held by the Society for Medical Decision Making and the International Papillomavirus Society. Assistant professor of Health Decision Science at the Department of Health Policy and Management, Harvard School of Public Health, Dr. Kim’s research focuses on the development and application of mathematical modeling methods to evaluate health policy issues related to women’s health. She recently was award the ASPH/Pfizer Young Investigator’s Award for Distinguished Research in Public Health.
7. Warren McNab, PhD, has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Association of Health Education and the American School Health Association, has been elected a fellow of these associations, and has received distinguished recognition awards from both of these associations. Professor of Health Promotion at the School of Community Health Sciences at the University of Nevada, Las Veagas, McNab has authored more than 50 scholarly articles on such topics as health education, human sexuality, and teenage pregnancy, and has served on a number of editorial boards of such scholarly journals as The Health Educator and The Journal of Health Education.
8. Marion Nestle, MPH, PhD, is Paulette Goddard Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University, which she chaired from 1988-2003. She also holds appointments as Professor of Sociology at NYU and Visiting Professor of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell. Her degrees include a PhD in molecular biology and an MPH in public health nutrition, both from the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of three prize-winning books: Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health, Safe Food: The Politics of Food Safety, and What to Eat.
9. Uwe E. Reinhardt, PhD, the James Madison Professor of Political Economy and Professor of Economics and Public Affairs in health policy and economics at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University, is recognized as one of the nation’s leading authorities on health care economics. In recognition of his contributions to the field of health services research and lifelong achievements, he has been named the 2010 recipient of the William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research. Dr. Reinhardt serves, or has served, on a number of government commissions and advisory boards including the Physician Payment Review Commission established by the U.S. Congress to advise on issues related to physician payment.
10. John A. Rich, MD, MPH, is Professor and Chair of Health Management and Policy at the Drexel University School of Public Health. He has been a leader in the field of public health, and his work has focused on serving one of the nation’s most ignored and underserved populations — African-American men in urban settings. In 2006, Dr. Rich was granted a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. In awarding this distinction, the Foundation cited his work to design “new models of health care that stretch across the boundaries of public health, education, social service, and justice systems to engage young men in caring for themselves and their peers.”

On top of being a rewarding career, nursing also provides you flexibility in a job that pays reasonably well. There are a number of career paths you can follow as a nurse, and during your education, you can get help with scholarships. The following list is in no particular order:

1. Brian May: This English musician is most widely known in his role as guitarist and songwriter for the band, Queen. His music talents are so special that he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2005 for his services to the music industry. But, May also earned his PhD in astrophysics in 2007 and currently is Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University. His thesis was entitled, A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud. Asteroid “52665 Brianmay” was named in his honor on 18 June 2008 with the suggestion provided by Sir Patrick Moore.
2. Greg Graffin: Graffin is an American punk rock musician and a college professor. He is recognized as the lead vocalist and songwriter for the Los Angeles band, Bad Religion, which he helped create in 1979. Over the years, Graffin obtain his college education, culminating in his PhD from Cornell University. He lectured courses in life sciences and in paleontology at the University of California, Los Angeles. The PhD dissertation was entitled Monism, Atheism and the Naturalist Worldview: Perspectives from Evolutionary Biology. He received Harvard Secular Society’s “Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism” on April 26, 2008.
3. Bill Cosby: This well-known American comedian, actor, author, television producer, musician and activist also is an educator. He began graduate work at the University of Massachusetts after The Bill Cosby Show left the air. He qualified for the graduate degree under a special program that allowed for the admission of students who had not completed their bachelor’s degrees, but who had had a significant impact on society and/or their communities through their careers. Cosby wrote a dissertation on one of his own shows, An Integration of the Visual Media Via ‘Fat Albert And The Cosby Kids’ Into the Elementary School Curriculum as a Teaching Aid and Vehicle to Achieve Increased Learning, as partial fulfillment of obtaining his 1976 doctorate in education. Additionally, Cosby has received honorary degrees from more than a dozen colleges and universities, including at least nine doctoral degrees.
4. Robert Vaughn: This American actor is noted as one of the Magnificent Seven and as the Man from U.N.C.L.E. He attended North High School and later enrolled in the University of Minnesota as a journalism major. He quit after a year and moved to Los Angeles, California, where he enrolled in Los Angeles City College, then transferred to Los Angeles State College of Applied Arts and Sciences, where he earned a Master’s degree in theater. Vaughn earned a Ph.D. in communications from the University of Southern California, in 1970. In 1972, he published his dissertation as the book, Only Victims: A Study of Show Business Blacklisting.
5. Miuccia Prada: You may recognize Prada as the famous Italian fashion designer and entrepreneur and the youngest granddaughter of Prada founder Mario Prada. But, she also has a PhD in political science, which she followed with five years studying performing mime. She was also a member of the Communist Party, which made her a reluctant heir to her grandfather’s luxury leather goods company. Since she took the helm in 1978, she made the company a success, building a conglomerate that took charge of Fendi, Helmut Lang, Jil Sander and Azzedine Alaia.
6. Milo Aukerman: Aukerman is best known as the lead singer of the early Los Angeles punk rock band, the Descendents. This group was widely considered to be the pioneers of the modern punk rock genre. However, the band suffered from Aukerman’s passion for academic research as he studied for his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He completed his dissertation, Analysis of Opaque-2 Function in Maize, and the band is once again back together, touring in Australia.
7. Temple Grandin: Temple is a Doctor of Animal Science and professor at Colorado State University, a best-selling author and a consultant to the livestock industry in animal behavior. She is one of a handful of individuals who have become famous because of their achievements, as Temple suffers from high-functioning autism. HBO recently produced the film, Temple Grandin, starring Claire Danes as Grandin. The film, released in 2010, was nominated for 15 Emmy categories. The film received five Emmy awards in August 2010, including Outstanding Made for Television Movie and Best Actress in a Drama for Danes. Grandin was on stage as the award was accepted, and spoke briefly on the microphone to the audience.
8. Hunter S. Thompson: This American journalist was most famous for his works, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72. He is credited as the creator of Gonzo journalism, a style of reporting where reporters involve themselves in the action to such a degree that they become central figures of their stories. Although lacking formal education, Thompson received an honorary doctorate from the Universal Life Church in the 1960s, and — from that point forward — preferred to call himself Dr. Thompson, or “doctor of journalism.” Thompson died in 2005 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
9. Kermit the Frog: As a puppet from Jim Henson’s most famous Muppet creations, Kermit is a well-known figure in the entertainment field. In honor of his efforts in the field of environmentalism, Kermit was awarded an honorary doctorate of Amphibious Letters from Southampton College, New York (now a campus of SUNY Stony Brook), in 1996. The university noted, “His theme song, ‘It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green,’ has become a rallying cry of the environmental movement. Kermit has used his celebrity to spread positive messages in public service announcements for the National Wildlife Federation, National Parks Service, the Better World Society, and others.” Kermit also delivered the commencement for that university that year.
10. Mayim Bialik: This American actress is best known for her lead role as Blossom Russo in the 1990s NBC sitcom, Blossom. She also had guest appearances on The Facts of Life and in Beauty and the Beast. She appeared in Beaches playing Bette Midler’s character as a young girl. When Blossom ended, she attended UCLA, despite having been accepted at both Harvard and Yale. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 2000 in neuroscience, Hebrew, and Jewish studies, and went on to the PhD. program in neuroscience, completing her PhD in 2008. Her dissertation was an investigation into Prader-Willi Syndrome.

This resource is listed below as well as many other resources that hold dissertations written both before and after that date on a wide variety of topics. You also can do a search for “ETD + school name” to find digital dissertations for any given school, if they exist.

Dissertation Searches

1. DART: DART-Europe is a partnership of research libraries and library consortia who are working together to improve global access to European research theses and link to full text theses.
2. Dissertation.com: Dissertation.com allows free, full-text access to the first twenty-five pages of each item.
3. EThOS: This Web site indexes UK dissertations and provides links to full text where available and provide assistance to institutions digitizing dissertations. If available, full text dissertations are free to download.
4. Google Scholar: Use this search engine to find older dissertations, books and other scholarly works that may be accessed in full text or abstract.
5. Microsoft Academic Search: Explore over 6,316,811 publications in a variety of topics through this new site.
6. Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations: NDLTD provides access to citations from thousands of digital dissertations and theses that are in PDF format. A significant number of these resources are freely available in full-text and can be viewed online.
7. OpenThesis: This is a free repository of theses, dissertations, and other academic documents, coupled with powerful search, organization, and collaboration tools.
8. Theses Canada Portal: Full text electronic versions of Canadian theses and dissertations are available in PDF format for those theses published from the beginning of 1998 to August 31, 2002.

Abstracts Searches

9. American Studies Association Doctoral Dissertations Abstracts: These dissertation abstracts are submitted to the American Studies Association by American Studies graduate programs and by recent American studies Ph.D.s.
10. Database of African Theses and Dissertations: Register to gain access to the DATAD database, which contains citations and abstracts for theses and dissertations completed in African universities.
11. Dissertation Abstracts Online: This search is a definitive subject, title, and author guide to virtually every American dissertation accepted at an accredited institution since 1861. Abstracts are included for doctoral records from July 1980 (Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume 41, Number 1) to the present.
12. PhdData: This site is the product of the combined initiative and efforts of several doctorate students in the U.S.A., Argentina and Israel, who felt the need for one site that would concentrate all existing information on doctoral researches around the world.
13. Thesis Abstract and Dissertation Abstracts: This site provides a library service which allows anyone who has written a thesis, dissertation or paper to publish their abstract and make it available to the Internet community.

Library Searches

In some cases, you may need to contact your institution or library to gain access to these databases or to specific papers.

14. Center for Research Libraries: Twenty thousand doctoral dissertations from outside of the United States and Canada are searchable from this site. No full text is available online, but items can be ordered through inter-library loan by students, faculty, and staff.
15. NCSU Libraries Theses & Dissertations: The North Carolina State University uses a search option that allows users to find dissertations stored online at that university as well as at other libraries. Must have an NCSU library pass, a local library pass, or you can use guest access in some cases.
16. OCLC WorldCat Dissertations and Theses: This database provides fast and convenient access to the dissertations and theses available in OCLC member libraries. Many of these are available electronically, at no charge, directly from the publishing institution.
17. OhioLINK Electronic Theses and Dissertations Center: This site contains theses and dissertations from PhDs throughout the Ohio college and university systems. This site also provides a worldwide ETD index search.
18. ProQuest: Log in through your library or institution to gain access to dissertations at this site. Most colleges and universities, after 1977, now file ETDs at this source.
19. The Library of Congress: This is the only institution in the country to purchase microform or electronic versions of all doctoral dissertations filmed by University Microfilms, which means most U.S. dissertations.

Communication for Academics
